John Goodman's Artist Talk, 2014

“I am drawn to the human body and its contradictions. I explore the contest between light and dark, grit and tenderness, power and grace."
- John Goodman

Goodman’s work resides in the permanent collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, MFA Boston and San Francisco MOMA. His work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone, and he has photographed campaigns for GAP, Converse, Faded Glory, Ungaro and Gucci. John Goodman is on the faculty of College of Art and Design at Lesley University and teaches at the Maine Media Workshops.

Toni Bentley of the New York Review of Books writes of "Boxers + Ballerinas", his recent exhibition at Rick Wester Fine Art in New York City, “Goodman’s images do not capture the public moments of victory and applause, but he goes backstage with his subjects…and his view would seem so intimate as to be voyeuristic, were it not for his evident respect, even awe.”

"John Goodman’s camera is...an iris of an eye that is our own, dissolving ostensible barriers between object and subject. His intention is to make us feel and not merely see the world of the
Times Square Gym."

- Joyce Carol Oates / Doubletake
